Going through the MLS or visiting one the major sites, Zillow, Realtor, or Trulia you can immediately tell which Realtor used a photographer. However, more often than not they just paid an average photographer to photograph their listing or a photographer that claimed he/she is a professional real estate photographer.

Without getting too technical about composition, the most significant tell that the photographer is an amateur are blown out windows. Blown out windows are the hallmark of an amateur real estate photographer, because being able to see through the windows and having a brightly lit room is an extremely difficult task to achieve. As a result many photographers deliver their clients a subpar product with blown ot windows.
Blown Out Windows
A professional real estate photographer has the skill to ensure that the room is well lit and the windows are not blown out. This takes extra time setting up and editing as well as the required skill to achieve such fantastic results. Therefore when selecting a Real Estate Photographer be sure to check whether or not their pictures have blown out windows or if they use HDR to achieve their results and stay clear of them.

Find a professional real estate photographer that can achieve results like the image to the right: Well lit interior, visible exterior through the windows, and natural not overly processed appearance.
A True Professional Real Estate Photographer Creates An Image With: A well lit interior, No blown out windows, and No HDR.
Window Correction Through HDR Processing = Amateur
The average real estate photographer is aware that they should correct the windows in post processing/editing. As a result they make an effort to do so through HDR (High Dynamic Range) that produces an image like the one to the right. HDR is created through use of multiple exposures that are combined allowing for the correction of the windows; however, it also results in the dirtiness or cartoonish effect that make the property look like a paiting. Stay away from HDR.
